Family Money Matters
One of the major sources of arguments and stress in
families is money management. Often, couples have difficulty discussing problems
in this area because they do not have a common philosophy about handling money
and have no commonly shared financial plan. In a culture beset with economic
woes, what shall we do to avoid problems with "money matters" in our
families.
First, we should seek a biblical perspective on material
wealth. The Bible teaches that all blessings come from God, that God owns
everything, and that God only allows us to use what we have for a while. Money
and possessions do not constitute the meaning of life, but are gifts of God to
be used for His good purposes (Luke 12:15). We are true materialists if we
believe that wealth is the key to happiness. Our lives are out of focus
biblically if we are constantly anxious over money, if we envy others for their
money or possessions, if we concentrate on what we do not have instead of being
thankful for what we have, and if we cannot experience the joy of giving to God.
The cure for money madness in our lives is godliness with
contentment (1 Timothy 6:10). We must learn to be happy with what we have and
manage what we have, so that we will not be always driven to acquire more. Paul
said, "I have learned in whatever state I am, therein to be content,"
(Philippians 4:12). For most of us, it will require a large practical and
philosophical change to reach the peace of contentment. It will require us to
get along with less so that we can be free of the stress brought on by excessive
debt and social competition.
Christian families should develop the grace of planned
giving to God. The same discipline required in order to consistently give a
planned percentage of our income to God will help us get control of our finances
and work harmoniously toward financial freedom. It will also guarantee us the
blessing and benevolence of God who takes care of those who put Him first. We
cannot out give God. Remember, "Seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness and all these things will be added unto you," (Matthew 6:33).
Father,
I ask your blessing to be upon me and my family. Help us
to be grateful for what you have given us and to use our wealth for your glory.
Help us to trust you and seek your will first. Thank you for all you do for us.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
